Sewing Table

Provenance

Ashbery purchased this sewing table (which sits by his front door) at Vito Giallo’s antique shop in the mid-1980s. Giallo called it a “Regency” piece.  Ashbery decided to display it open with a colorful plate from his own collection.  The flower and butterfly design on the inside top echoes the pattern on the letter-holder (above and to the left of the sewing table) and several other small pieces in the center hall and in the downstairs library.
